Diversified Industries - One simple fix: The daily maintenance plan
Our years of experience in Maintenance and Reliability have helped us understand some of the most common tactical problems behind poorly performing maintenance/reliability operations.
The good news: Most of the common issues are relatively easy to fix, with simple, practical but effective basic tools and procedures.
The bad news: Many maintenance/reliability leaders are seeking complex, technical solutions that stem from the latest gimmicks, fads, books or buzzwords.
If you are being pressured for “silver bullet” improvements, but know that you have to establish the basics first and then build upon them, we can help. If you are concerned with what actually delivers higher craft productivity and increased uptime while maintaining or decreasing costs (despite how simple or mundane the answer may be) then please read on…
Example: The Daily Maintenance Plan
- Are your supervisors actually supervising, or are they progress chasers or purchasing clerks?
- Does every craft technician know what jobs he/she will be assigned to tomorrow?
- Do you know, even roughly, where all your technicians should be at any given time of the day?
- Do your supervisors plan their work and work their plan?
- At the end of each day, do you have measures to know if it was a good day or a bad one?
- At the end of each day, can you instantly tell how productive you were? What was achieved?
- Can you tell your parts department what to assemble for tomorrow?
If the answer to any of these basic maintenance questions is “No,” then you may be in need of a simple, but effective Daily Maintenance Plan: A single sheet of paper per supervisor that details:
- What work orders must be completed that day
- What support craft coordination will be required
- How many hours each work order is expected to take
- Which technicians or crew is assigned to each work order
- In what sequence these work orders must be completed
- What jobs were completed during the day, what work carried over, what work interrupted your schedule
At MTG, we have been designing and installing simple tools like this for over a quarter of a century. We can show you how, without the gimmicks, books and buzzwords.
